Volunteer United is a regional collaboration uniting multiple United Way chapters across Northeast Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia. Launched in December 2019, it serves as a centralized platform for volunteers to easily connect with community needs, especially those affected by disasters like Hurricane Helene. By uniting United Way offices in the region, Volunteer United streamlines volunteer efforts, offering a single location for individuals to find meaningful opportunities to support their communities.

Following a disaster, rapid mobilization and organization of support efforts are crucial. After this initial response, ongoing relief and recovery efforts remain essential in the long-term revitalization of a community.

United Way actively coordinates initiatives that are vital to restoring our affected communities, such as the facilitation of Long-Term Recovery Groups in the aftermath of Hurricane Helen.

Which counties do you serve?

We support nonprofit organizations that serve residents in Carter, Johnson, and Washington counties in Northeast Tennessee.

While we do not directly provide assistance to individuals, we do support a number of community non-profits that serve individual needs. To see the non-profits we fund, click here. Unlike single-issue nonprofits, United Way takes a holistic approach. We invest in education, health, and financial stability, understanding that no one issue exists in isolation.

For example: If a child is hungry, unhealthy, or struggling with mental health, they have a difficult time learning in school. Without a solid education, they have a hard time earning a living and taking care of themselves and their family as adults.

United Way of East TN Highlands only supports local nonprofit organizations (Carter, Johnson and Washington Counties in TN). Specific investments can change year-to-year based on the needs and gaps in service for our community. You can find a current list here.

Programs are selected through a team of community volunteers with expertise in health, education and financial stability, and community resilience. This team of volunteers uses a Community Needs Assessment to identify the needs of the community and gaps in service. Then they evaluate programs based on outcomes, financial stewardship, and alignment with community priorities.
