To start, let’s answer a simple question. What is planned giving?

In simple terms, planned giving is the process of making a significant charitable gift during a donor’s life or at death that is part of his or her financial or estate plan.

The case study

The case study we’ve prepared is from a planned gift by an anonymous individual in the Johnson City area that created three very significant initiatives, all of which came to life when we received the gift in 2020. A longtime supporter and friend to the United Way of East TN Highlands included us in her will and when that estate was realized, her compassion for our community and belief in a positive future showed through in her legacy.

Thousands of community members and their families for generations to come have been positively impacted because of this planned gift. Together we had a vision of a fund that would give nonprofits an opportunity to be creative, try new ideas, use emerging technologies to shake up the old systems and have access to resources for new programs.
