Washington County, TN – December 4, 2024 – United Way of East TN Highlands announces the creation of a pivotal role to drive post-disaster recovery across Northeast Tennessee. The new Regional Director of Long-Term Recovery will oversee and support recovery efforts in Northeast TN, ensuring a unified approach to rebuilding and resilience in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

The Regional Director position, funded through a 12-month grant contract, will focus on providing strategic guidance, coordinating resources, and facilitating collaboration among county recovery groups. This role will enhance local capacity to address shared challenges and secure resources to meet community needs.

Key Responsibilities of the Regional Director:

  • Strategic Guidance: Align county recovery efforts with regional priorities and provide support to executive directors in developing recovery plans and committee structures.
  • Resource Allocation: Secure funding and facilitate the distribution of financial, human, and material resources across counties.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Coordinate regional meetings, share best practices, and offer expert technical assistance in areas such as construction, legal matters, and federal aid applications.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop and track performance metrics to ensure effective recovery efforts and provide actionable feedback to county-level leaders.

“This position marks a significant step forward in ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive response to disaster recovery in our region,” said Leslie Dalton, CEO, United Way of East TN Highlands. “We want to ensure that each survivor is made whole. By creating this role, we aim to empower counties with the strategic oversight and resources needed to rebuild stronger, more resilient communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.”

In addition to serving as a liaison between United Way and local recovery groups, the Regional Director will conduct regular assessments to identify ongoing needs and gaps in services, ensuring no community is left behind. Equipped with essential tools and supported by a collaborative network, the Director will work to strengthen recovery efforts and restore stability across the region.

Most counties affected by Hurricane Helene are in the process of forming a Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG). This position will help guide and support these groups.  A Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is a coalition of community organizations, nonprofits, faith-based groups, government agencies, and volunteers dedicated to ensuring that every individual and family affected by a disaster is fully supported on their journey to recovery. With a survivor-centered approach, the LTRG strives to address all unmet needs—physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual—so that every survivor can achieve wholeness and stability.
