90 years later

90 years later – from community chest to regional united way

On February 17, 1931, the Community Chest in Johnson City made it’s first investment back into our community through the distribution of clothing, bedding, food and furniture valued at over $8,000 (worth nearly $140,000 today). Fast forward 90 years, and that Community Chest has has evolved more than anyone could have imagined in the 1930’s. Though we have gone through name changes over the years (Community Chest of Johnson City, United Fund of Johnson City, United Way of Johnson City, United Way of Washington County, TN and United Way of East TN Highlands) each name change has created growth and opportunity for the organization and the families that we work to support.

Today, our footprint includes Washington, Carter, Johnson, and Southern Sullivan Counties, making it possible for United Way to reach more families in need than ever before. Countless leaders across the community have volunteered their skills and expertise over the years as members of the board of directors, campaign chairs, project leaders, and fundraisers who carry out and spread the message of United Way to their friends, family, and co-workers.

Today, our volunteers are right in the middle of evaluating grant applications, a process that is not taken lightly. Last year nearly 40 programs held by local nonprofits were chosen as grant recipients that collectively impacted over XXX,XXX lives in our community. Due to efficient fund management, as well as an increase in fundraising, United Way is aiming to increase the amount of funding available.
